What is DoctorsTelemed®?

DoctorsTelemed delivers online, secure, live-video visits 24/7/365 by licensed and board certified clinicians directly to patients.

DoctorsTelemed is supported and managed by the Medical Society of Northern Virginia Foundation and our technology partner, CareClix.  Profit margins are not a priority; coordinated, quality and cost effective care are our guiding principles.

What is Telemedicine?

Formally defined, telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status.  Telemedicine includes a growing variety of applications and services using two-way video, email, smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology.

How does it work?

DoctorsTelemed is all about convenience and accessibility!  Get started with 4 easy steps!  1. Register to create account, 2. Complete medical history, 3. Find a doctor, 4. Begin video session with an “on-call” clinician or schedule a visit to see that clinician in-person.

How much does it cost to use DoctorsTelemed®?

Price varies depending on each clinician.  If you live in VA, MD and DC, your insurance plan covers certain qualified online visits, co-payment may still apply.  Please view each doctors profile for accepted insurances.  If you don’t have insurance, no problem!  Most clinicians accept cash payments as well.

Terms and Conditions for first free online visit

New registered patients will receive 1 free online visit, which must be used within a six-month period with any DoctorsTelemed clinician.  Patients who cancel confirmed appointments will be charged the value of that visit.


DoctorsTelemed does not charge registration or monthly fees and new patients receive 1 free online visit to get started (see Terms and Conditions for free online visit).  Patients must complete the account information section and enter form of payment in order to schedule online and in-person visits.

When can I start using my DoctorsTelemed® services?

As soon as you complete your registration, you can schedule a online video or in-person visit with your favorite clinician.

Is DoctorsTelemed® appropriate for every medical condition?

No. Telemedicine is designed to handle non-emergency medical issues.  You should not use telemedicine if you are experiencing a medical emergency.   In case of a medical life-threatening emergency, you should dial 911 immediately.

While telemedicine is NOT intended to replace your primary care doctor for common or chronic conditions, a virtual appointment can sometimes substitute a doctor’s office or urgent care visit.  When needed, the clinician may recommend an in-person follow up visit.

How is DoctorsTelemed® different from other online care services?

DoctorsTelemed is a non-profit initiative created to expand access to quality medical care for nearly the same cost of an average co-payment. Because DoctorsTelemed is local, patients have the added convenience of scheduling network clinicians in-person if necessary.

Can DoctorsTelemed® handle my emergency situations?

No, DoctorsTelemed is designed to handle non-emergency medical issues and/or follow up consults. You should NOT use telemedicine if you are experiencing a medical emergency. If you have a medical emergency, you should dial 911 immediately.

Can DoctorsTelemed® be accessed on mobile devices?

Yes, DoctorsTelemed can be accessed on most Apple and Google enabled mobile devices with an internet/data connection.  Mobile app coming soon!

Is DoctorsTelemed® covered by health insurance plans?

In VA, MD and DC, some qualified online video visits may be covered by insurance plans.

In the event your insurance plan does not cover a online video visit, patients can download invoices from their past live-video consults and submit for reimbursement to their respective health savings accounts (HSA), health reimbursement arrangements (HRA), or Flexible spending accounts (FSA).  Please check with your respective health insurance plan and HSA, HRA or FSA administrator.

Can I use DoctorsTelemed® when I am traveling – even internationally?

Yes, as long as you have an established patient/physician relationship, you can use DoctorsTelemed to reach in-network clinicians regardless of your location.

In VA, MD and DC, a physician/patient relationship can be established through a live-video visit, this means patients in these states don’t need a first in-person visit to access DoctorsTelemed’s clinicians.

When is DoctorsTelemed® available?

Any time you have a non-emergency condition, are unable to see your primary care doctor, or when you simply prefer a convenient alternative to an urgent care center or retail clinic.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

No.  However only parents and/or guardians can register minors under 18.   Additionally, a guardian must be present at the time of the online video visit of an underage dependent with an account.

What languages are offered on DoctorsTelemed®?

Most clinicians speak at least one other language than English.  Additional language skills are visibly posted on clinicians’ profiles.

If someone has a pre-existing condition, can he/she still register?

Yes. DoctorsTelemed is not an insurance plan but a service of convenience, so there are no exclusions, access denials, and no additional fees because of pre-existing conditions.

When would I use DoctorsTelemed® instead of seeing my own doctor?

You can choose to use DoctorsTelemed for a more convenient alternative to the high cost of a visit to a doctor’s office or urgent care center.

According to experts, 70% of visits to the urgent care center or retail clinic are considered unnecessary or preventable.  While proper care may be necessary; the travel, time away from work, long waits and the cost of the visit can be avoided.

Who are DoctorsTelemed® clinicians and what are their qualifications?

All clinicians are Board Certified and/or licensed in VA, DC and MD. They are fully credentialed and have passed background checks with primary verification using the National Practitioner Databank and the American Medical Association. DoctorsTelemed clinicians follow national standards of medical practice.

About Board Certification: While medical licensure sets the minimum competency requirements to diagnose and treat patients, Board Certification demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.

Can I request a specific doctor or see my own?

Yes, patients always have control of which provider they want to access by scheduling a visit in advance with any DoctorsTelemed clinician.

If your clinician is not part of DoctorsTelemed, then invite him/her to join.

Are DoctorsTelemed® clinicians evaluated?

Yes, patients have the ability to rate their clinician after the session for satisfaction. The results are evaluated for quality and service trends as part of our continuous improvement process, at least four times per year.

Will the clinician review my medical history before starting a online video visit?

Yes. Same as a standard office visit, patients must complete their medical history and clinicians must review and discuss any areas of concern with patients during the first online video consults.

Can a provider prescribe medication as part of a DoctorsTelemed® consult?

Yes. If the doctor believes medication is warranted, he or she can write a prescription (schedule II through VI medications, please see the Virginia regulation), which can be sent directly to the patient’s preferred pharmacy.

Who has access to my health information?

For the purposes of clinical care and referrals to specialists, only clinicians you have requested on DoctorsTelemed will have access to your health history information.

Will I have a record of my DoctorsTelemed® visits?

Yes, these are kept in the past appointment history tab. Your medical records from all DoctorsTelemed visits with discharge notes can be accessed and downloaded at any time.

What technology do I need to access DoctorsTelemed® online video visits?

  • Supported Web Browsers: Google Chrome and Firefox
  • iOS requirements for the mobile app are an iPhone 4S or higher. For Android, a device should be running Android 4.0 or higher
  • DoctorsTelemed works with all standards compliant webcams. For the best possible video quality we suggest a high-definition (720p or 1080p) webcam such as the Logitech c920 or Microsoft LifeCam Studio.
  • Speakers or headphones
  • A connection with a download speed of 768Kb/sec and an upload speed of 512Kb/sec is required in order to take part in video chat sessions. A connect of 2Mb down / 1Mb up is suggested and will result in a higher quality user experience. A connection of 3.5Mb down / 2Mb up is required for high-definition video quality.

The password I received does not work.

Carefully type the password, keeping in mind that it is case sensitive. Do not copy and paste the password. If you still cannot login, send an email to [email protected]

The video conference does not start.

Make sure that you have a webcam and microphone and that they are not in use by other applications.

When prompted, be sure to allow the camera and microphone.

What should I do if I get disconnected?

If your webRTC session is disconnected, simply follow the same steps to rejoin the appointment. You do not have to create a new appointment.

The mobile app is not working properly, what should I do?

Check your app store to make sure the DoctorsTelemed app is up to date. Update the app if one is available.

The webRTC session begins, but there is no audio or video?

If you are trying to connect from a school or work network, there may be firewall restrictions blocking video and/or audio traffic.
